Led by captain Louis Oosthuizen, the South African LIV Golf team, Stinger GC, had a clean sweep in their quarter-final on Friday in the LIV Golf Invitational Team Championship in Miami at Trump National Doral in Florida.

The fifth seeds, who needed to advance through quarter-final action to earn the right to play one of the top four of 12 teams, won all three of its matches against Iron Heads GC.

Louis Oosthuizen defeated Kevin Na 5 & 3. Oosthuizen won four consecutive holes to finish the first nine and never looked back. Branden Grace beat Scott Vincent of Zimbabwe 2 & 1. Grace was one down before winning four of the last five holes. Dean Burmester and Charl Schwartzel took down Sihwan Kim and Danny Lee 2 & 1 in the foursomes match. The Stingers rallied from an early deficit and won four holes during a seven-hole stretch to gain control.

In another of those LIV actions that defy explanation, captains of the top four seeds then selected their opponents for the semi-finals. Torque GC, the youngest team in the LIV Golf League, won more tournament titles (four) than any other team this season, but they’ll face a tough South African squad that posted the only shutout.

“They’ve got youth, so he’ll learn. So, we’ll see,” Stinger captain Oosthuizen said of his match against Torque captain Joaquin Niemann. “It’s going to be fun tomorrow.”
