Retief Goosen opened the PGA Tour Champions Cologuard Classic at La Poloma Country Club in Tucson, Arizona, with a four-under-par 67 to be in a share of sixth place after the first round.

It was a bogey-free start for the two-time US Open champion as he settled in five strokes behind the nine-under-par target set by former Open champion Stewart Cink of the United States. Cink led by two from Miguel Angel Jimenez of Spain and Cameron Beckman of the United States.

Ernie Els was one stroke behind his countryman Goosen on three-under, after he had five birdies and two bogeys on his car for the opening round. He was in a share of 14th place.

The 50-year-old Cink’s bogey-free 62 came in just his sixth start since qualifying to play on the PGA Tour Champions, and it his lowest effort in his 18 rounds so far. He won as recently at 2021 on the PGA Tout when he took the RBC Heritage title.
