Christiaan Bezuidenhout was unable to finish in the top 10 of the PGA Tour’s Players Championship on Sunday, but he fought off the effects of two early bogeys to card a closing two-under-par 70 to finish in a share of 13th.

In a finish that showcased the brilliance of world number one Scottie Scheffler, Bezuidenhout bogeyed the first and the fifth, but birdied the fourth to turn on one-over 37. And while Scheffler’s closing eight-under 64 gave him a thrilling one-stroke win over US Open champion Wyndham Clark, Open champion Brian Harman and the man who has come so close to so many major titles, Xander Schauffele, Bezuidenhout made three birdies on his home ward nine to finish the tournament on 11-under.

It was a performance that took him into the top 20 of the FedExCup rankings and closer to the world’s top 50 as time gets tight to try and earn a Masters invitation in the next two weeks ahead of the end of the month.
