The rise and rise of Broomhead in the world rankings

Three weeks ago, Jonathan Broomhead was squarely outside the world’s top 1,000 players on the Official World Golf Ranking list. His maiden Sunshine Tour victory in the Tour Championship at the weekend sees him firmly inside in 668^th place.

It was a polished performance for Broomhead to close out his rookie season on the Sunshine Tour, as he beat an impressive list of experienced players, as well as the likes of Rookie of the Year winner Robin Williams and Order of Merit winner Ryan van Velzen.

He only managed to crack the world’s top 1,000 with his share of 13^th in the previous week’s Limpopo Championship when he climbed from 1,038^th to 992^nd. He had an eye-popping 324-place jump with his victory at Serengeti.

He hasn’t managed to climb inside the South African top 25 according to the official world ranking list, but his seventh-place finish on the Sunshine Tour Order of Merit delivered by the Courier Guy suggests he’s inside that group based on performance rather than an increasingly inaccurate algorithm.

Also outside the top 25, Louis Albertse climbed 55 places from 537^th to 482^nd, as a result of his runner-up finish in the Tour Championship.

Inside the top 25 in 15^th place, Jayden Schaper was the biggest climber as he rose 16 places to inside the world’s top 300 at 299^th. He’s edging closer to his highest-ever ranking of 274^th. Deon Germishuys climbed a seven more spots this week to 325^th.

South Africa’s top player according to the rankings remains Christiaan Bezuidenhout, down two places this week to 58^th, while Erik van Rooyen’s share of 55^th in the Masters saw him slip one place to 64^th.

South Africa’s top 25:
