Retief Goosen opened his campaign in the Senior Open Championship on Thursday with a one-under-par 71 in the first round at Carnoustie Golf Club for a share of seventh place.
Goosen made three birdies and two bogeys to be three shots off the lead. Stephen Ames of Canada made five birdies and a bogey on his way to a four-under-par 68. He led by one from KJ Choi of Korea, England’s Peter Baker and Paul Broadhurst and Australian Richard Green.
Scott Hend of Australia was in sixth on two-under, and Goosen shared seventh with Padraig Harrington, Ireland’s Peter Lawrie, Kiwi Steven Alker, Jason Gore of the US, Austrian Markus Brier, American Fran Quinn, Bradley Dredge of Wales, Dane Thomas Bjorn, Italian Emanuele Canonica and the Spanish duo of Miguel Angel Martin and Jose Manuel Carriles.
Keith Horne opened with a two-over 74, while Adilson Da Silva had a six-over 78. James Kingston battled to a seven-over 79.
