South Africa’s Shaun Norris maintained his second position following a first-round 64 as the second round of the Japan Golf Tour’s Fujisankei Classic was cancelled due to heavy rains with only six players managing to tee off at the Fujizakura Country Club on Friday.

First round play was already suspended due to weather conditions on Thursday, and 38 players resumed their round early Friday morning with Riki Kawamoto securing the opening round lead after carding a seven-under-par 63 at the Fujizakura Country Club. Seven players including Taiga Semikawa and Hiroshi Iwata are bunched in third place on matching 68s.

Norris, who finished tied-third last week, continued to show his good form. Like Kawamoto, the South African also started on the back-nine 10 and birdied 11. His only blemish came on the 15th hole before four birdies and an eagle-three on the eighth hole saw him returning with a 64.

“I started off slowly in my front-nine but I remained patient and was rewarded after I made the turn. I managed to create more opportunities for myself then. Overall, it was a good day.

“I had a good break and was pleased with my finish last week. I hope to continue playing well,” said the 42-year-old.

Play will resume at 7am Japan time on Saturday.
