A late bogey on Thursday was the only thing that stopped Aldrich Potgieter from holding a share of the lead after the first round of the PGA Tour’s Mexico Open at VidantaWorld at Vidanta Vallarta in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

Potgieter had made seven birdies after starting his round on the 10th, before dropping his sole shot of the day on the eighth hole. That gave him an opening six-under-par 65 and put him in a five-way share of fourth. In the lead were Harry Hall of England, Germany’s Jeremy Paul and Kris Ventura of Norway.

It was a crowded leaderboard all the way down it, with nine players in a share of ninth on five-under-par, and 13 players on four-under-par in a share of 18th.

Erik van Rooyen opened with a two-under-par 69, and he was down in a share of 52nd. Thiurston Lawrence continued to struggle to get his season on the PGA Tour going, and he opened with a one-over-par 72 for a share of 103rd.
