Christiaan Bezuidenhout remained South Africa’s top golfer this week, climbing five places to 65th on the Official World Golf Ranking list after his solid, if unspectacular, share of 16th on the PGA Tour.

Bezuidenhout, who had been down five places to 70th last week, regained those spots ahead of his appearance in the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Ohio. That’s one of the PGA Tour’s ‘Signature’ events, and it give his access to elevated points. He’s the only South African in that field.

Below Bezuidenhout, Aldrich Potgieter got a nice bump up the official list, climbing 15 places to 127th. That lifted him above Garrick Higgo on the list of to South Africans according to the official rankings. He’s now the fifth-best South Africa, per that list.

An indication of how skewed towards the PGA Tour the official rankings are comes from the fates of two South Africans who probably felt they deserved better for their performances last week.

Thriston Lawrence finished in a share of fourth on the DP World Tour in the Soudal Open in Belgium, but was unable to gain any upward traction. He remained unchanged in 90th, and that shows just how under-valued the DP World Tour tournaments are by the Official World Golf Ranking.

Also undervalued, like many smaller tours around the world, is the Sunshine Tour, and Daniel van Tonder’s second place in the Waterfall Tournament of Champions actually saw him drop three places to 162nd on the official list.

Besides Bezuidenhout and Potgieter, Casey Jarvis was the only South African in the list of the top 25 players in this country to go up. He finished in a share of 37th in Belgium, and was up three places to 331st.
