Paula Reto carded an opening three-under-par 69 on Thursday for a share of 24th after the first round of the LPGA Tour’s Meijer LPGA Classic for Simply Give at Blythefield Country Club in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Reto started her round on the 10th, and got into her scoring with birdies on the 17th and 18th. She dropped a shot on the first after the turn, but made two more birdies, on the fourth and the eighth.
On a crowded leaderboard, she was five strokes behind the lead, held at eight-under-par by Korea’s Mi Hyang Lee. In second was Australia’s Grace Kim, with three players sharing third on six-under.
Then came the logjam: six players shared sixth on five-under, and 12 were in a share of 12th on four-under. Reto was one of 19 players on three-under.
Ashleigh Buhai opened with a two-under-par 70 for a share of 43rd, while Lee-Anne Pace had a level-par 72 for a share of 83rd.
