Retief Goosen was just one shot off the lead on Thursday after his opening two-under-par 68 in the first round of the PGA Tour Champions’ Kaulig Companies Championship at Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio.
Goosen made three birdies and dropped just a single shot, and he was in a share of third behind Soren Kjeldsen of Denmark and Argentina’s Ricardo Gonzalez. New Zealand’s Steven Alker and Stewart Cink shared third with Goosen, with four players on one-under I na share of sixth.
Angel Cabrera, who already has captured two majors (the Regions Tradition and the Senior PGA Championship at Congressional), opened with a 71.
Ernie Els, the only other South African in the field, carded a two-over-par 72 for a share of 29th in the 78-player field.
The 50-year-old Danish rookie Kjeldsen is making just his fourth start on PGA Tour Champions and continues his impressive run in 2025. Kjeldsen, who turned 50 in May, has already posted back-to-back top-two finishes.
The 55-year-old Argentinian is searching for his second PGA Tour Champions title. Gonzalez, who won the 2024 Trophy Hassan II, is making his 49th career start.
