He missed the opening tournament of the season, and, in the five events he’s played in the 2025-26 season of the Sunshine Tour, Jonathan Broomhead has won once, come second once, has a fourth-place finish, a share of 30th and missed a cut.
As he goes into the SunBet Challenge at the Wild Coast Sun Country Club on Wednesday, he takes with him recent form, as he won the opening event in that series two weeks ago at Wingate Park Country Club.
He also took a share of second in the non-Order of Merit event in May, the Waterfall City Tournament of Champions. He has increasingly looked like a player who is on the verge of a dominating run on the Sunshine Tour.
Add to that the fact that he won at the Wild Coast Sun when the Vodacom Origins of Golf event took place there last year in October, then he looks as if he will present a pretty imposing hurdle for the other players. He did that with a closing 63.
The other players have plenty to offer in resistance to a one-man Broomhead show: Herman Loubser leads the Order of Merit, with his last four results being second in the Mopani Zambia Open, a share of second in the FNB Eswatini Challenge, victory in the Vodacom Origins of Golf at Parys, and a share of 13th in the Sunbet Challenge Time Square.
Young Samuel Simpson took the Mopani Zambia Open title, and is looking to become more consistent, even though he has two other top-10s to his name.
And a player like the veteran Jean Hugo has a 60 to his credit with an eagle and nine birdies at the Wild Coast Sun. So if there are benign conditions, he, as much as anyone else, can go very low.
Broomhead won three times in 2024. With one win under his belt already this season, the Wild Coast Sun event could get him a second this year and be a springboard for a title – or two – in the big events at the end of the year.
