Ernie Els finished in a share of 17th on Sunday after his closing two-under-par 69 took him to four-under-par for the tournament in the PGA Tour Champions Stifel Charity Classic at Norwood Hills Country Club in St Louis, Missouri.
Els started his round on the 10th hole with a bogey, and he made another on the 17th ahead of the turn after he had picked up a stroke on the 13th. He was bogey-free after the turn, with gains on the second, fifth and seventh.
In the end, he finished eight shots out of the play-off, which was won on the first extra hole by Thomas Bjorn of Denmark, who made birdie to Cameron Percy’s par. Alex Cejka of Germany finished third on 11-under-par.
Retief Goosen made his third one-under-par 70 in a row to finish on three-under for the tournament and in a share of 24th.
Els remained in fifth place in the Charles Schwab Cup rankings, while Goosen stayed in 12th.
