Dylan Frittelli finished the DP World Tour’s DS Automobiles Open d’Italia at Circolo Golf Torino in a share of 11th on Sunday after a closing one-under-par 70 which included two bogeys and a double.

He birdied the first, but dropped his first shot immediately thereafter on the second. There were gains on the fifth and the 10th, but he made a second bogey on the 12th. His double-bogey came on the 17th, and he picked up a closing birdie, which, together with the one he had on the 13th, limited the damage somewhat.

He finished the tournament at 13-under-par, which was 11 strokes behind the runaway winner, Eugenio Chacarra of Spain.

The Spaniard backed up his KLM Open win in the Netherlands earlier this month with another national open. Matt Wallace made a valiant attempt to overhaul Chacarra’s two-stroke 54-hole lead but Chacarra’s 64 ensured a winning margin of five at 24-under-par. Victory also earned him a place in next month’s 154th Open Championship at Royal Birkdale.

Chacarra is only the fifth player to win the Dutch and Italian Opens in the same year and the first since Ramón Sota – the uncle of Seve Ballesteros – in 1971, with the other three instances all in the 1950s.

Daniel van Tonder was the next-best of the South Africans who made the cut, his closing two-under 69 taking him to 11-under and a share of 25th.
