On a day when eight-under-par 62s were a dime-a-dozen, MJ Viljoen popped one of four of them in the second round of the Asian Tour’s Link Hong Kong Open at the Hong Kong Golf Club on Friday.

Viljoen made two birdies on the front nine, and had a run of five birdies in a row from the 10th on the back nine, and he rounded out his gains for the day with a birdie on the 17th.

That took him to nine-under-par for the tournament, which was five strokes off the lead. Up front, after a 62 of his own, was Matthew Cheung, who will attempt to become the first player from the territory of Hong Kong to win the prestigious title in its 65-year history.

American Caleb Surratt also shot a 62 and was second place on his own on 11-under-par, while Indian Anirban Lahiri, England’s Steve Lewton and Jazz Janewattananond from Thailand shared third place another stroke back.

Scott Vincent of Zimbabwe was on eight-under in a share of 11th place after his second round of three-under-par 67. Louis Oosthuizen was a further shot back in a share of 13th after he signed for a four-under-par 66.

Kieran Vincent and Ian Snyman were on five-under in a share of 25th after rounds of 64 and 69 respectively, and Dean Burmester was on four-under in a share of 37th. Branden Grace was on three-under in a share of 50th, together with, amongst others, Jaco Ahlers.

Jbe’ Kruger missed the cut.
