Rhys Enoch, the 2018 Cape Town Open champions, and a regular Sunshine Tour campaigner, carded a seven-under-par 65 on Friday to take a share of the halfway lead in the European Tour’s Cazoo Classic at London Golf Club in Kent.
Enoch, a Welshman married to a South African and with a child born in the country, made seven birdies and didn’t drop a shot as he drew level with England’s Dale Whitnell at 10-under-par through 36 holes. The pair had a one-stroke lead over Jordan Smith of England and Scot Calum Hill.
The best of the South Africans was Daniel van Tonder, who overcame a double-bogey and a bogey for his second successive three-under 69, and, at six-under for the tournament, is in a share of eighth, four off the pace heading into the weekend.
Van Tonder bogeyed the second, but he eagled the par-five fifth and picked up two birdies ahead of the turn. He birdied 14 and then made his double on the 15th. He got it back to three-under for his round with a birdie on 18.
Justin Walters signed for a one-over 73 to move to one-over for the tournament, while Bryce Easton, Wilco Nienaber, Louis de Jager, Brandon Stone and Haydn Porteous all missed the cut.
Enoch won the Kit Kat Group Pro-Am on the Sunshine Tour in March, and has one Challenge Tour win in the D+D Real Slovakia Challenge in 2019. He is looking for a maiden European Tour title.
