Olympic silver medallist Rory Sabbatini, the South African now representing Slovakia, carded a six-under-par 64 on Friday to move into a share of second in the PGA Tour’s Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, North Carolina.

The former Royal Durban representative needs a good finish this week to give himself a shot at playing in the FedEx Cup playoffs which get underway next week. He’s currently ranked 141st on the list, and needs to be inside the top 125 to get in on the season-ending action.

There are no such problems for the man who won last week on the PGA Tour, Erik van Rooyen, who is in 78th. He carded a one-under 69 in the second round to take up position in a share of 23rd after he opened with a five-under. At six-under for the tournament, he’s eight strokes behind leader Russell Henley, who took advantage of his opening 62 with a second-round 66 to pull four clear of Sabbatini and fellow-Americans Webb Simpson and Scott Piercy.

Van Rooyen had two double bogeys and two bogeys on his card, and, with seven birdies, he will know he can score well over the weekend if he eliminates those big numbers.

Branden Grace also carded a second-round 69 to move to five-under in a share of 32nd. Dylan Frittelli and Charl Schwartzel missed the cut.
