Louis Albertse won his first Bushveld Tour title on Friday when he fired a three-under-par 69 in the second round of the two-day event at Benoni Country Club to move to 13-under-par for the tournament.
After his superb opening round of nine-under-par 63, he was always going to be tough to catch, and although Ryan van Velzen tried hard with his second round of six-under 66, Albertse eventually had a six-stroke cushion over Van Velzen. Clive Palm and Michael Kok finished in a share of third on four-under, with Dylan Naidoo and Ockie Strydom sharing fifth on three-under.
Albertse started fast with a birdie on the first, but he immediately made bogey on the second. He kept his head, however, and birdies on four, nine, 10 and 14 sealed the deal for him.
Van Velzen, who is based at Benoni Country Club, put his local knowledge to good use with a really fast finish. Having turned in one-under, he parred his way to the 14th, and on that par-four, he made an eagle to set up his closing burst. Birdies on 15, 16 and 18 completed his scoring.
