Christiaan Bezuidenhout carded his second successive three-under-par 69 on Thursday to move to six-under at the halfway stage of the PGA Tour’s Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines in San Diego in California.
Bezuidenhout had a great opening nine to his second round, with birdies on five and eight, and an eagle on the sixth as he hit his approach to the par-five from 252 yards stiff, and tapped in. He picked up another birdie on the 13th, but he dropped shots with consecutive bogeys on the 16th and 17th. He climbed 15 places on the leaderboard into a share of 23rd.
The halfway lead was held at 13-under-par by Americans Adam Schenk and Justin Thomas together with world number one John Rahm of Spain. Schenk’s round was bogey-free and featured eight consecutive birdies from the fourth until the 11th. He and the others were one shot clear of Cameron Tringale, with Peter Malnati in fifth on 11-under.
Dawie van der Walt missed the cut after a second-round of four-over 76 left him at three-over-par for the 36 holes. Dylan Frittelli, who started so well with an opening 67, slumped to a nine-over-par 81 in the second round, and also missed the cut at four-over.
