There was no catching the eventual winner of the PGA Tour Champions’ Chubb Classic on Sunday, but Retief Goosen completed a good week as he closed with a two-under-par 70 to finish third, four shots off the pace.
Goosen’s first two rounds of five-under-par 67 each put him in a position to perhaps have a go at leader Bernhard Langer, but the ageless German added a second successive four-under-par 68 to his opening 64, and, at 16-under for the tournament, ran out a two-stroke winner over American Tim Petrovic.
Goosen had a rocky start to his final round, with three bogeys in his first five holes putting him on the back foot. But he responded with three birdies in his next four holes to reach the turn on level-par. A bogey in the 12th was followed with three more birdies, on the 14th, 15th and 18th. That took him to 12-under for the tournament.
Ernie Els carded a closing level-par 72 to finish in a share of 10th, while David Frost had a 77 in the final round to be in a share of 61st.
