Dylan Frittelli fired a six-under-par 66 on Friday to move himself firmly into contention for the weekend in the PGA Tour’s Valero Texas Open in San Antonio, Texas.

Frittelli’s bogey-free round started on the 10th hole, and he made birdies on 11, 15, 16 and 18 to turn in four-under. He picked up two more shots on his way home, on the first and second. At eight-under for the tournament, he is in a share of second place behind the leader Ryan Palmer of the United States, who also shot a 66 to move to 10-under at the halfway stage. Frittelli shares second with Americans Kevin Chappell and Matt Kuchar.

It’s a last-minute push by Frittelli to get himself in the field for the Masters at Augusta National this week. He missed the cut there last year, and had a superb share of fifth back in 2020 behind winner Dustin Johnson.

The other South Africans in the field, Dawie van der Walt, Branden Grace and Garrick Higgo didn’t make the cut. Higgo will lick his wounds and head to Augusta National for he debut at the Masters.
