Leading amateur Christiaan Maas carded a one-under-par 71 on Friday in the second round of the Bushveld Tour’s two-day event at Glendower Golf Club to ease to a one-stroke victory.
Maas had probably done enough to ensure the win when he opened with a seven-under-par 65 in the first round, but the finishing touches still had to be applied for him to ease clear of Ryan van Velzen by one shot. The previous winner on the tour, Sean Bradley, finished in third.
Maas didn’t have a good start, racking up three bogeys in the first seven holes without making a single birdie. But he got things back on track with birdies on eight, nine, 11 and 13. He dropped a shot again on the 15th, but he immediately got that back with a final birdie for the day on 16.
Van Velzen also had three bogeys in the first seven holes, but he responded to that poor start with six birdies and no more dropped shots on his way to a closing 69 together with his first-round 68.
Bradley was much more consistent: He opened with a 70, and closed with a 68. In the second round, he made six birdies through the 14th hole without dropping a shot to get into a share of the lead, but bogeys on 15 and 16 stymied his chances of a second victory in a row.
