While MJ Daffue might have been frustrated with his closing level-par 72 on Sunday for third place in the Korn Ferry Tour’s AdventHealth Championship in Kansas City, he must surely be on the verge of a breakthrough victory.
Daffue made three birdies and three bogeys in the final round to finish the tournament at 15-under-par. That put him two shots behind the winner Trevor Cone of the United States, and one behind another American, Taylor Montgomery, who was second on 15-under.
Cone drained a 19-footer for birdie as outright leader Montgomery three-putted for bogey on the 72nd hole, creating a two-shot swing for Cone to secure his second career Korn Ferry Tour victory.
If Daffue was the kind of player to have regrets – and he isn’t – then he would probably look at his second and fourth rounds of 71 and 72 for ways to improve and get the victory he so richly deserves.
Daffue recorded his third top-four finish of the season with a solo third, accruing enough points to cross the 900-point mark the Korn Ferry Tour is currently using as its fail-safe threshold for players to finish inside the top 25 at regular season’s end and earn a PGA Tour card. Daffue is the third player this season to cross the threshold, joining points leader Carl Yuan and second-ranked Seonghyeon Kim.
