While things looked as if they were running away from him at the top of the leaderboard on Friday, Daniel van Tonder kept himself in the mix in the second round of the DP World Tour’s BMW International Open with a three-under-par 69.
His six birdies and three bogeys took him to nine-under-par for the tournament, six shots off the pace which was set by first-round leader Haotong Li of China at 15-under. Li carded a five-under 67 to lead New Zealand’s Ryan Fox by one after the Kiwi carded an eight-under 64.
Van Tonder was one shot clear of Wilco Nienaber, who added a two-under 70 to his opening 66 to move to eight-under and a share of 11th.
Dean Burmester had a four-under 68 to climb into a share of 16th at seven-under. He made seven birdies in his round, but also dropped three shots.
Brandon Stone sprang into life with his second round of six-under 66, moving to six-under for the tournament in a share of 26th.
George Coetzee, Louis Oosthuizen and Thriston Lawrence were on five-under in a share of 37th after rounds of 71, 60 and level-par 72 respectively.
Zander Lombard and Jacques Kruyswijk were on four-under, making the cut on the number.
Darren Fichardt, Oliver Bekker, Haydn Porteous, Justin Walters and Richard Sterne all missed the cut.
