Deon Germishuys remained the leading South African after 36 holes of the European Challenge Tour’s Irish Challenge, thanks to a level-par second round at The K Club in Straffan, Ireland on Friday.
On a tournament total of six-under-par, Germishuys is seven shots off the lead which is held by England’s Todd Clements, a name that all the South African players in that field are familiar with. Clements, who has played numerous Sunshine Tour events in the last few years, fired in an impressive 65 on Friday to back up his opening 66, taking his total to 13-under through 36 holes.
Germishuys had what many would label a terrible start to his round, dropping twice in the first three holes. He steadied himself in the next two holes, making important pars to keep the score decent. His reward for his patience was a birdie on seven but that joy was short-lived as a bogey on nine tainted his card. Once again, Germishuys recovered with a birdie immediately after the turn and made four consecutive pars from there on.
Germishuys birdied 15 and didn’t give anything away in the closing stretch, making pars through to the 18th. He’s tied 12th ahead of the third round.
Germishuys’ compatriot, Rupert Kaminski, shot one-over-par 73 on Friday and is now three-under for the week and in a share of 33rd with countryman Tristen Strydom among others. Trydom’s even-par 72 was enough to see him to the weekend. Another South African who made the cut is Pieter Moolman after he carded a second-round 73. He is one-under-par for the week.
