Christiaan Bezuidenhout put himself in some places he didn’t want to be on Friday when he carded a two-over-par 73 in the second round of the PGA Tour’s BMW Championship in Wilmington, Delaware.
That dropped him 27 places down the leaderboard to a share of 33rd, and that projects him to finish 62 after the tournament on the FedEx Cup points list. He needs to be inside the top 30 if he hopes to play in the Tour Championship at East Lake in Atlanta next week.
He started well enough with birdies on the fourth and fifth, even though he had to get out of a fairway bunker on the fourth. But his troubles started on the sixth when he three-putted from about 55 feet to make the first of four bogeys.
He laid up on the par-five 12th, and still managed to dunk his third into the water from 107 yards. Bogeys numbers three and four came on 14 and 17, and both times, he found fairway bunkers. On the par-five 14th, he was only able to splash out and then was unable to get his third on the green. On the 17th, he got out of the bunker well enough but messed up his chip from 60 feet. He two-putted from 20 feet.
To illustrate his second-round difficulties, Bezuidenhout hit eight of 18 greens in regulation during his second round, and had a good round of putting, with no misses on putts within 10 feet. He hit only seven of 14 fairways, which compromises the strengths of his game.
The tournament was being led by Australian Adam Scott at eight-under. He was one clear of world number one Scottie Scheffler, Cameron Young, Corey Conners of Canada and Jordan Spieth.
