Louis de Jager matched the second lowest round of the day on Saturday as his six-under-par 65 saw him vault up the leaderboard into a share of third after the third round of the DP World Tour’s acciona Open de España in Madrid.
It was his second bogey-free round in a row after his superb seven-under 64 in the second round, and, at 13-under-par for the tournament, he was just three back from the leasder, Jon Rahm of Spain. Rahm is bidding to win his third title in Madrid, and he was one stroke clear of Australia’s Min Woo Lee. De Jager shared third with five other players, including Eddie Pepperell.
One stroke further back was Zander Lombard, who had his second successive 66 to move to 12-under and a share of ninth. His round included an eagle, six birdies and three bogeys, and he shared ninth with three other players, including European Ryder Cup vice-captain Edoardo Molinari who had the round of the day with his eight-under 63.
Hennie du Plessis battled to reproduce his form from the first two rounds as he carded a level-par 72 in the third round to stay at 10-under-par for the tournament in a share of 13th. Daniel van Tonder had a level-par 72 to stay at five-under for the tournament in a share of 41st. Tristen Strydom had a two-over 74 and slipped to two-under in a share of 56th, while Wilco Nienaber signed for a level-par 72 and was in 59th on one-under.
