George Coetzee regained the summit of the leaderboard on Saturday as he carded a five-under-par 67 to move to 11-under-par in the third round of the Sunshine Tour’s PGA Championship at St Francis Links.
It was a bogey-free effort from Coetzee as he got himself into pole position to win the title for a second time in his career after he took the second-oldest professional title in South African golf back in 2011 at Country Club Johannesburg. At 11-under, he was one shot ahead of Rhys West. Halfway leader Casey Jarvis was in a share of third on nine-under with Stefan Wears-Taylor, Hennie Otto and Jake Redman.
Coetzee made two birdies on the front nine and three on the way home, while West, who is in search of a maiden Sunshine Tour title, made an eagle two on the fifth, five birdies and three bogeys in his four-under 68.
The last winner on the Sunshine Tour, Combrinck Smit, who took the Vodacom Origins of Golf Final at Pinnacle Point last week, carded the round of the day as his eagle and four birdies on his card of six-under-par 66 took him into a share of seventh, one stroke behind the players in third on eight-under.
Also in a share of seventh was Martin Vorster, like Jarvis one of South Africa’s top amateurs now trying to make his way in the professional ranks on the Sunshine Tour. Vorster carded a one-under 71 in the third round, and joined Luke Jerling and Peter Karmis with Smit in seventh – all just four strokes behind Coetzee heading into the final round.
