Frittelli’s birdie blitz shakes up Alfred Dunhill leaderboard

He was six-under through six holes on Friday, and qualifier Dylan Frittelli eventually signed for a six-under 66 in a low-scoring second round of the Alfred Dunhill Championship at Leopard Creek.

Two eagles, five birdies, two bogeys and a double lifted him to a share of 10th at the halfway stage of the tournament. At eight-under, he was five shots behind the leader, Scott Jamieson of Scotland, who put together a pretty impressive round himself with a nine-under-par course-record 63. Jamieson was bogey-free and had a one-shot lead over France’s David Ravetto and Englishmen Nathan Kimsey and Eddie Pepperell.

Frittelli’s golden run came early on in his round, as he opened with a birdie on the first, an eagle on two, and a birdie on three. He made par on four, birdie on five, and another on the short par-four sixth. Then the difficult par-three brought his first bogey and the scoring spree was put on hold. After the turn, he birdied 11, and made his second eagle on the picturesque par-five 13th. He dropped another shot immediately on the 14th, made his double on the seemingly innocuous 17th, and picked up a final stroke with a birdie on 18.
He shared 10th with Louis Oosthuizen, who had a golden run of his own with five birdies in a row on his opening five holes from the 10th.

One stroke ahead of him on nine-under after 36 holes were MJ Daffue, who also had a six-under in the second round, Dean Burmester, who had a two-under 70, Oliver Bekker, who signed for a six-under 66, and Dylan Mostert, who had a superb seven-under 65.

It was a day which delivered 25 eagles, and the normally tough course averaged under-par at 71.56 – and that included two players who carded 11-over 83s and all the players who missed the cut.
