Louis Oosthuizen’s share of seventh in the weekend’s Alfred Dunhill Championship gave him enough world ranking points to all but assure him of an invitation the Masters next year.
And while Ockie Strydom’s massive 142-place climb on the list of the Official World Golf Ranking was the big story, Oosthuizen climbed three places to 48th and back inside the top 50, which should be enough to keep him there through December 31. That means he will be eligible for an invitation to Augusta National in April, to go with his long-term eligibility to play in the Open Championship which he won on 2010. He will have to wait and see how the LIV Golf position changes – if at all – in its relationship with the rankings body to find out if he will be able to play in the other two majors, the US Open and the PGA Championship.
Strydom’s win was life-changing, and his 142-spot climb to inside the world’s top 250 ranked players makes him the 17th-best South African by that metric.
Dean Burmester edged closer to the top 50 in the world with his share of seventh at Leopard Creek. He was up two places to 56th, and a good performance at his ‘home away from home’, Mont Choisy Le Golf Mauritius in this week’s AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open could vault him up the rankings and secure a Masters invitation.
A share of ninth for MJ Daffue in the Alfred Dunhill Championship saw him climb 14 places on the world rankings list. At 149th, he is now South Africa’s eight-best player, according to the list.
