Matt Saulez fought off the effects of a double-bogey six on Monday to take the first-round lead of the Bushveld Tour’s Race to Q-School College Sports America Series #3 at Modderfontein Golf Club.
Saulez made four birdies on his front nine without dropping a shot. He then made his double on the 12th, but picked up birdies on 13 and 16 on his way home. That put him in a one-stroke lead over the ever-consistent Keegan McLachlan, who had a three-under-par 69.
McLachlan, who leads the Order of Merit for the three-tournament series, made an eagle, five birdies and four bogeys in his first round.
Basil Wright also carded a three-under 69, and there were seven players on one-under-par 71.
