While the attention was on the stacked field and on Tiger Woods’ return to tournament golf outside the majors, Christiaan Bezuidenhout opened the PGA Tour’s Genesis Invitational at Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles with a level-par 71.

Play was suspended, but the big guns had already done their thing, as Max Homa led at seven-under, together with Keith Mitchell. Jon Rahm was on six-under, Collin Morikawa on five-under, Rory McIlroy on four-under, Justin Thomas on three-under. And, Woods was on two-under after a run of three birdies to finish.

Bezuidenhout made three birdies and three bogeys, having started his round with a birdie on the 10th. He made three bogeys before the turn, and then pulled things back with birdies on three and six on his way home. At level-par, he was in a share of 56th.

The only other South African in the field, Dylan Frittelli, carded a one-over-par 72 to be in a share of 77th.
