When someone shoots a 62 to set himself up for a big victory, a lot of other good performances pale into insignificance. And JJ Senekal’s final-round 65 in the SDC Open at Zebula Golf Estate and Spa was almost as dominating a performance, too.

That his 62 in the first round had a bogey in it too was quite astonishing. He had just a single bogey per round up to the third round, and then he went bogey-free in a final round under the pressure of looking for a first win since 2018 – as well as having to ward off the challenge of his pursuers who came hard at him and cut his lead to just one shot down the final stretch.

He book-ended that final round with two birdies in a row at the start, and two in a row at the finish. The three birdies in between kept him in the lead which he had held since the first round.

He now has three victories on the Sunshine Tour, in 2013, 2018 and this year. His play over the last year suggests it won’t be another five-year wait before he adds a fourth to his resume
