It wasn’t the strongest start to a new chapter in Dean Burmester’s career as he carded a two-over-par 73 in the first round of LIV Golf’s opening event for 2023 at the El Cameleón Course at Mayakoba just south of Cancun in Mexico.

Burmester made three birdies and five bogeys, and was eight strokes behind the leaders, Jason Kokrak of the United States and England’s Paul Casey. They led by one from American Peter Uihlein, local player Carlos Ortiz and Talor Gooch of the United States.

Best of the four South Africans in the field was Branden Grace, who had a three-under-par 68 to be in a share of sixth in the 48-man field.

Charl Schwartzel was on three-over in a share of 36th, while Louis Oosthuizen was in 43rd on five-over.

In the team competition, the South African Singer GC was on two-over, with three of the fours scores counting. That put them in 10th, 12 strokes out of the lead which was held by Chrushers GC, consisting of Paul Casey, Charles Howell III, Anirban Lahiri and Bryson DeChambeau.
