Marthin Scheepers carded a five-under-par 67 on Monday in the opening round of the Bushveld Tour’s Race to Q-School Wanna Be A Champion Series #1 at Woodhill Country Club.
His eagle, four birdies and a bogey gave him a two-stroke lead over Maritz Wessels, Rigardt Albertse and Johan Theron after 18 holes of the 54-hole tournament. There were eight players on one-under-par 71 in a share of fifth.
Scheepers had a slow start, with all pars and a bogey on his front nine, but he got things going well on the way home, making eagle on the par-five 17th after picking up birdies on 10, 11, 14 and 15.
The Race To Q-School Series is made up of three separate series of events. Each has its own Order of Merit. The Wanna Be A Champion Series Series is the third of the three. The top four finishers from each series will receive paid entry fees into the Sunshine Tour Qualifying School in April.
