Ernie Els raced 35 places up the leaderboard on Saturday as he signed for a second-round six-under-par 65 in the PGA Tour Champions’ Hoag Classic and Newport Beach Country Club in California.
Els made seven birdies and a bogey to move to seven-under-par for the 54-hole tournament, in a share of 14th. Bernhard Langer, who beat his age for the eighth time on the tour, carded a seven-under 64, and led at 12-under by one from Doug Barron of the United States and Miguel Angel Jimenez of Spain.
Defending Hoag Classic champion Retief Goosen was on four-under 138 in a share of 35th in his bid to become the first player to successfully defend a Hoag Classic title.
