Louis Oosthuizen birdied his first hole on Friday on his way to a five-under-par 66 in the opening round of the LIV Golf Invitational-Singapore at Sentosa Golf Club and a share of sixth place in the 54-hole tournament.
Oosthuizen started on the second hole in the shotgun start, and he bogeyed the next hole before making three more birdies and an eagle on the par-five 18th. He dropped one more shot, and he was two shots off the lead set by Talor Gooch of the United States. Gooch started fast for the second week in a row and made five birdies and an eagle to lead countryman Cameron Tringale, Sergio Garcia, Brooks Koeka and Cameron Smith by one stroke.
Oosthuizen shared sixth with Phil Mickelson and Bryson DeChambeau, and Charl Schwartzel was one shot back in a share of ninth on four-under. Dean Burmester was on two-under in a share of 15th, while Branden Grace had a one-under 70.
The all-South African team, Stinger GC, which has been on the podium in all LIV Golf events this season, started well as it tries to pull off its first win: Oosthuizen, Burmester, Schwartzel and Grace were second on 11-under-par, one behind Mickelson’s team, HyFlyers GC.
