Despite two bogeys down the stretch on Thursday, Luke Mayo held on for a three-stroke victory with a closing one-over-par 71 in the Bushveld Tour’s Hamilton’s Series #3 at Killarney Country Club.

Mayo, who led after the second round, dropped shots on the 13th and the 16th, in addition to the early bogey on the second. But his birdies on seven and 15 were enough to keep him well clear of the clutches of Andre van Dyk and Pierre Pellegrin, who closed with a one-under 69 and three-over 73 respectively to share second on one-under-par for the 54-hole tournament.

Amateur Sam McKenzie finished fourth on one-over for the tournament after he signed off with a one-over-par 71. Hanlo Jacobs had a level-par 70 to move to two-over and a fifth-place finish.

First-round leader Jason Froneman closed with a five-over 75 to finish five-over for the tournament in a share of eighth.

There is one more tournament in the series after this one – at Centurion on May 30. The Order of Merit for the four-event series carries a purse of R40,000 for the player who tops it at the end of the series, provided he’s played two events or more. Currently, Willem Swart heads up the list. Mayo, who has played two events, climbed to 10th with his win.
