Adilson Da Silva didn’t finish the way he might have liked to on Sunday, but he still managed a share of 20th in the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship at Fields Ranch East in Frisco, Texas.
The Brazilian who lives in South Africa and who has won 12 times on the Sunshine Tour closed with a four-over-par 76. In a pressure-filled final round of his first senior major championship, he made five bogeys and just a single birdie to finish the week on three-under-par. That put him 15 shots outside the play-off which was contested between Padraig Harrington and Steve Stricker.
Harrington, 2021 European Ryder Cup Captain, entered the final round with a one-shot lead over Steve Stricker, the victorious American Ryder Cup Captain from two years ago. The two men later walked up the par-five 18th fairway with Stricker holding a one-shot lead on one of the biggest risk-reward holes on the golf course.
Harrington used his prodigious length and reached the green in two shots and two-putted for birdie. Stricker missed from 18 feet for birdie to win the championship outright.
Stricker, however, capitalised on a poor drive from Harrington on the first play-off hole and walked away with his first KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship, his second major of the year and sixth major overall. He shot 70-67-64-69 for an 18-under-par 270 total and his final-round 69 was his 49th consecutive round of par or better on the PGA Tour Champions.
Retief Goosen had a closing 73 to finish in a share of 31st on one-over, and Ernie Els had a level-par 72 to stay on two-over in a share of 37th. James Kingston finished a quiet week with a three-over 75 taking him to 10-over and a share of 70th.
