Retief Goosen opened with a one-under-par 70 on Thursday in the first round of the US Senior Open Championship at SentryWorld at Stevens Point, Wisconsin to be just two strokes off the lead.
It was a roller-coaster affair for the man who won the US Open twice, as he made five birdies and four bogeys. The man who took the lead after the first round was Australia’s Rod Pampling, who had a three-under 68. Sharing second with Goosen on 70 were Mike Small of the United States and Miguel Angel Jimenez of Spain.
One stroke behind Goosen were Ernie Els and James Kingston, as well as Adilson Da Silva, all of whom opened up with level-par 71.
Alan McLean, now based in Canada, had an eight-over-par 79 to start with.
