On a tough opening day in the Senior Open Presented by Rolex at Royal Porthcawl Golf Club in Bridgend, Wales, Keith Horne fared the best of the South Africans with an opening one-under-par 70 putting him in a share of sixth.
Horne closed with an eagle on the 18th after making three birdies and four bogeys, and was one of only 11 players to break par in the 144-man field. The lead was held by Miguel Angel Jimenez of Spain on five-under, and he had a two-stroke lead over Mario Tiziani of the United States and Germany’s Alex Cjeka. Vijay Singh and Jeev Milkha Singh shared fourth on two-under.
James Kingston had a three-over 74 for a share of 52nd and Chris Williams was on four-over in a share of 65th together with Doug McGuigan and Mark McNulty. Adilson Da Silva was on six-over in a share of 105th place.
