Amateur Joshua Koekemoer made a late bogey on Wednesday but still managed to hold on for a four-stroke victory in the Bushveld Tour’s Blue Label Series #2 at Wanderers Golf Club in Johannesburg.
Koekemoer’s opening round of six-under-par 65 set him up for his victory as he closed with a three-under-par 68 to get to nine-under for the 54-hole event. That took him four strokes clear of Oliver Goldhill, who had a closing level-par 71 to finish on five-under in second.
Jacques van der Merwe, Daniel Cronje and Haydn Porteous shared third on four-under-par after closing rounds of 68, 70 and 70 respectively.
Koekemoer opened with a birdie in the final round, but dropped a shot on the second. He got things back into red figures with a birdie on the ninth. He seemed well on his way with another birdie on the 10th, but dropped a shot on the 11th. Birdies on 13, 14 and 16 put him well on his was to a comfortable victory, and that late bogey was eventually only academic.
The victory puts him in fourth place on the Bushveld Tour’s Order of Merit, behind the leader Goldhill. Cronje and Lyle Pedro are in second and third places.
