Jayden Schaper got his second top 10 finish in the last three weeks on Sunday when he closed with a bogey-free four-under-par 67 in the DP World Tour’s Open de España at Club de Campo Villa de Madrid in Madrid.

He made two birdies on each of the nines in his final round, climbing to 11-under-par for the tournament. That put him four strokes out of the play-off which was won by England’s increasingly impressive Marco Penge, who birdied the first extra hole to defeat compatriot Daniel Brown after they both finished on 15-under.

Schaper, who came nine in the FedEx Open de France two weeks ago, has now climbed to 24th in the Race to Dubai rankings as the season races towards its climax. He finished 65th last season, so this is a substantial improvement for a player who is still seeking a maiden victory. It was his eighth top-10 finish of this season.

Thriston Lawrence also went up on the rankings, one place to 25th, with his share of 23rd after his closing round of level-par 71.

Brown birdied the 72nd hole to join Penge at 15-under but on the first trip up the last, it was Penge who made a birdie to seal his third win of a remarkable breakout season.  He started the week third in the rankings and while he only moved up one place, the 835.00 points won put him within fewer than 500 of long-term leader Rory McIlroy at the summit. McIlroy will tee it up at the DP World India Championship before the two men tackle both events in the DP World Tour Play-Offs, with all to play for in the battle to win the Harry Vardon Trophy.
