Kyle Barker carded a six-under-par 64 on Monday in the opening round of the Bushveld Tour’s Hayes Family Trophy-Elite Series #1 at Killarney Golf Club to take the first-round lead in the 54-hole tournament.
Barker led a field packed with Sunshine Tour players keeping themselves active ahead of the resumption of tournament play on that tour on July 19. He made an eagle, six birdies and two bogeys to put himself three shots clear of Coert Groenewald and Ricky Hendler, both of whom were on three-under-par 67.
Brandon Gildenhuys, Estiaan Conradie, Matthew Spacey and amateur Enzo Barbaglia were in a share of fourth on two-under-par, and Samuel Simpson, Luke Brown, Ruan Korb, Luke Mayo Nikhil Rama and Johan Theron shared eighth on one-under.
Barker, who won on the Sunshine Tour last season when he took the Stella Artois Players Championship at Dainfern in April, opened with a pair of birdies to get off to a fast start. He dropped a shot on the fourth, but made birdie on five to turn in two-under. He picked up three more shots on 11, 13 and 14, before he made eagle on 15 to go five-under in five holes. He bogeyed the last to finish on six-under.
