He started with a bogey, and Dylan Frittelli battled his way throughout the final round of the PGA Tour’s Valero Texas Open on Sunday, carding a one-over 73 and slipping to a share of eighth.

It was a tough day for Frittelli after he held a share of the lead going into the final round, with the knowledge that a victory would have given him a spot in the Masters this week at Augusta National. Instead, his closing total of nine-under-par was four shots behind the winner JJ Spaun of the United States, who closed with a three-under 69. Spaun was two clear of Matt Jones of Australia and veteran Matt Kuchar of the United States.

Frittelli got things back on track after that opening bogey, making birdies on four and eight. But he dropped another shot on the ninth, giving him plenty of work to do on the home stretch. He followed three pars after the turn, but he dropped two more on the 13th and the 15th. There was a consolation birdie on the 18th.
