Oliver Bekker signed for a final-round two-under-par 69 to finish in a share of fourth on 10-under-par in the DP World Tour’s Soudal Open at Rinkven International Golf Club in Antwerp, Belgium, on Sunday.
The 37-year old South African has been enjoying a good run of form on the DP World Tour where he currently lies 10th on that tour’s rankings. Following a runners-up finish in Spain in the last event, and a solid showing in the first 54 holes of this tournament, the Stellenbosch Golf Club player was among those yipped to have a great week in Antwerp.
He did not disappoint as back-to-back rounds of 69 backed up an impressive opening 67 as Bekker made his climb up the leaderboard. On Sunday, a par-bogey-par start signalled a slow start but Bekker had other ideas as he birdied four and five while making par on the six before another unwelcomed bogey found its way onto his card on the seventh hole. He did well to save par on eight before birdieing the ninth.
After the par he made at the turn, Bekker found no joy on the 11th as he gave another shot away, threatening to halt his progress. But, an experienced campaigner of Bekker’s quality always finds a way. He steadied himself with three straight pars as he kept the big numbers off his card and then on the 15th, his patience was rewarded with a birdie there. Bekker made further gains on the 17th to seal a hard-earned 69.
His tournament total of 10-under sees him finish in a share of fourth with Hanna Chase, three shots behind eventual winner Sam Horsfiled. The next highest-placing South African in that field was Hennie du Plessis who finished in an eight-way share of 15th on a tournament total of six-under-par.
Thriston Lawtence’s week ended with a share of 58th on two-over-par while JC Ritchie’s five-over-par total was enough only to see him finish a lowly T64.
