Christiaan Bezuidenhout posted a four-under-par 66 on Friday in the PGA Tour’s first play-off event, the FedEx St Jude Championship in Memphis, Tennessee, to move into a share of 27th.
It was a bogey-free effort from the 2020 South African Open champion, with his four birdies lifting him 33 places on the leaderboard. At five-under for the tournament, he was six shots off the lead which was held by American JJ Spaun. Spaun’s 67 lifted him to 11-under and a one-stroke lead over Sepp Straka of Austria and Troy Merritt of the United States.
Next up for Bezuidenhout is the quest for a string finish. He is currently projected to finish the tournament in 51st on the FedEx Cup standings, and thus guaranteed a start in next week’s BMW Championship which is restricted to the top 70. He will be shooting for a place inside the top 30, which will take him into the Tour Championship.
Dylan Frittelli had a second round of level-par 70 to be at four-under for the tournament in a share of 33rd. That projects him to finish 102nd on the FedEx Cup rankings, which will mean his season ends before the BMW Championship.
A number of top players, including world number on Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy, missed the cut.
