Christiaan Bezuidenhout was the only one of five South Africans to make the cut as he carded a two-under par 68 in the second round of the PGA Tour’s Wyndham Championship at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina.
Bezuidenhout’s eagle, two birdies and two bogeys saw him climb into a share of 40th on the leaderboard at three-under-par through 36 holes. That put him nine strokes behind the lead which was held by Russell Henley of the United States on 12-under. Henley led by one from Billy Horschel, who had an eight-under 62.
The four South Africans who missed the cut were Garrick Higgo, MJ Daffue, Dylan Frittelli and Erik van Rooyen.
For Frittelli, it was disappointing after an opening 68 was followed by a 79, and, for Higgo, it means the end of the season for him as he won’t climb inside the top 70 to play next week’s FedEx St Jude Championship.
Even though Bezuidenhout has made the cut, he too will probably miss next week’s tournament as he is ranked outside the top 100 on the FedEx Cup rankings and will probably need to finish on the podium to climb high enough.
