PGA Tour Champions rookie Darren Fichardt carded a bogey-free 11-under 61 on Saturday, tying the low round of the 2026 season, to hold a one-stroke lead over six-time PGA Tour Champions winner Zach Johnson after the second round of the Simmons Bank Championship.

The 51-year-old South African rookie delivered a masterclass at the Pleasant Valley Country Club in Little Rock, Arkansas, carding what he later described as his ‘best round ever.’

Fichardt started his second round on fire. After opening with a steady par on the first hole, he unleashed an extraordinary streak. He went birdie-birdie-eagle-birdie over the next four holes to rapidly climb the leaderboard. Maintaining his intense momentum, Fichardt tore through the front nine to sign for a blistering eight-under-par 28 before making the turn. This set a record for the lowest nine-hole front score in tournament history since the event relocated to Pleasant Valley in 2024.

His flawless run continued onto the back nine with immediate birdies on the 10th and 11th holes, briefly generating buzz around a potential sub-60 round. While his scoring cooled off slightly with six consecutive pars over the following stretch, Fichardt closed out his historic day in style by birdieing the par-five 18th.

His magnificent 11-under 61 tied the lowest 18-hole score of the 2026 PGA Tour Champions season and matched the course tournament record. Following an opening-round 69, Fichardt’s two-day total reached 14-under-par 130, displacing first-round leader Johnson by a single stroke heading into Sunday’s final group.

The flawless round dramatically altered the postseason landscape, momentarily projecting Fichardt to leap from 46th to 13th in the Charles Schwab Cup standings and secure a ticket to the season finale.
