Deon Germishuys made four birdies on his homeward nine on Thursday on his way to a bogey-free six-under-par 66 and a share of third after the first round of the Challenge Tour’s Big Green Egg German Challenge at Wittelsbacher Golfclub in Neuburg an der Donau, Germany.

After a steady start on the front nine, with birdies on one and five, Germishuys picked up two in a row on 12 and 13, and again on 15 and 16. That left him two strokes off the lead, which was held by John Axelson of Denmark at eight-under 64. Axelson was also bogey-free, and had a one-stroke lead over Oihan Guillamoundeguy of France.

Also six-under in a share of third with Germishuys was Robin Williams, who had a week off last week. He returned to the fray in fine style, with six birdies by the time he reached the 16th tee. But he made two bogeys on the trot before atoning with a closing eagle-three on the 18th.

JC Ritchie opened with a two-under-par 70 for a share of 21st, and Louis Albertse had a one-under 71 for a share of 34th.

Wilco Nienaber had a three-over 75, and was down in a share of 103rd.
