On a packed first-round leaderboard, Barend Botha was just one stroke off the lead on Thursday after his opening five-under-par 65 in the Korn Ferry Tour’s 118 Visa Argentina Open presented by Macro at the Jockey Club in Buenos Aires.

Botha made an eagle, six birdies and three bogeys, and he was one of seven players on five-under. They were all one stroke behind eight players who shared the lead on six-under-par 65.

In an incredible logjam in the upper reaches of the leaderboard, there were 13 players on four-under-par in a share of 16th, and 35 players on three-under in a share of 29th. Included in that massive bunch was Christo Lamprecht, who made six birdies, a bogey and a double-bogey.

It was the fourth official occurrence in tour history in which eight players have shared the 18-hole lead. The last was in the 2012 Chiquita Classic.

It raises the incredible spectre of the cut falling just three or four strokes off the lead after 36 holes.
